Chapter 13

It took a while, but I finally succeeded in pushing my feelings of failure behind me. The second I did, I kicked myself hard for wasting time.

Think!

What makes this room so different from the rest of the Library?

I glanced around to see what the others were doing.

Jarid had fallen asleep in the chair in a corner, snoring lightly. Apparently, excitement made him pass out.

I shook my head and turned to the others.

Gwen had curled up on the floor with the wolves. She was awake but staring at the ceiling.

I could hear Will prowling around somewhere in the room, but I couldn’t see him.

His loud footsteps told me he hadn't gotten past our little spat yet.

I felt bad for my part in the disagreement, even more so for him. Once I'd had time to think about the conversation, I knew we’d been unfair. If anyone should be considered trustworthy, he could. I owed him an apology, but held back, deciding it best to wait until he’d calmed down.

I winced when I heard a clang in the distance. I got up, turning to the wall closest to me. It was bare, so I moved on. I’d taken a brief glance at everything when we'd first been shoved into the room, but our disagreement had distracted me from looking for clues.

What did I know for sure? We were still in the Library, so this room had to be part of it. If that was the case, there must be a reason it looked so different from the rest of the Library. I just needed to figure out why.

I caught Gwen watching me, but when our eyes met, hers jumped away. My spirits dropped at the thought I'd hurt her feelings too. I reasoned the quickest way out of the doghouse with all my friends was to get us out of this room.

If I could find the right clues, I could open the room the same way I had opened the Suun Room or found the goblet in the temple. I walked slowly along the wall, coming to a bay of large, dark gray metallic objects.

This seemed more promising. These dark boxes also had lights of varying shapes like the lighter ones near the exit.

Up close, I was able to see familiar images, and when I squinted, I realized one button had a picture of an ax inside a rectangle. The base was a dark green, but it wasn't glowing like the others. I pressed my lips together until I remembered where I’d seen them at which point my mouth dropped open.

It was the same image as the gate in the marketplace we’d taken to escape Sunglen. As this struck me, I realized the guards hadn't taken my bag.

I opened it, my excitement causing me to throw open the flap rougher than usual and rustled through it until I found the piece of parchment Jarid had given me the day I’d fought with the slaver.

Yes! It was the same.

With renewed hope, I scanned the paper and looked at the large metal object in front of me.
